The process of finalizing the IEEE 802.11n specification is proving tricky, and the IEEE task group overseeing it is now saying that the final release probably won't happen until early 2008. The early draft status of the spec hasn't stopped hardware manufacturers from developing and selling products based on it, and that has contributed to the latest delay. There may be a silver lining to this cloud, though—what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

802.11n, how do we love thee? The public thirst for 100Mbps (or better), secure wireless networking seems unquenchable, and the industry is doing little to dissuade us from the temptation. Chip makers like Atheros and Broadcom are pumping out 802.11n chipsets based on their interpretation of draft 1.0, and end-product specialists from D-Link and Linksys to Belkin and even Dell are happy to profit from our early-adopter fever.

The IEEE has acknowledged that it feels pressure to complete the specification as soon as possible due to overwhelming public interest in the technology, and the wide availability of product on the open market has brought in unprecedented amounts of comments on the working draft. The fact that every comment has to be looked at and addressed is the direct reason for the delay—there are over 12,000 entries to deal with, although a lot of them have nothing to do with networking. "There were a lot of duplicate comments, and three people filed comments for each and every blank line in the document," says Atheros Chief Technical Officer Bill McFarland.

There are real issues too, however, and the massive interest should weed out most of the bugs in short order. Some of the issues concern interoperability with earlier WiFi generations like today's champion 802.11g, and with 802.11n gear from other manufacturers. The draft has left a few choices open, such as which method to use to combine channels, or what method to use for beam forming. The task group has already handled about 6,000 of the 12,000 comments, and a vote on the second draft of the standard is expected by January 2007. If that draft gets at least a 75 percent approval, final ratification would happen in early 2008. The IEEE rarely makes substantial changes between passing the approval vote and final ratification, though. For all intents and purposes, the January vote is the Holy Grail we're looking for.
