O centro brasileiro será o responsável por desenvolver, até o início de 2007, o projeto de uma estação radiobase (ERB) para conexões WiMax. A Intel desenvolveu a plataforma básica do projeto e selecionou parceiros em todo o mundo para as diversas partes que envolvem a solução.

Carla Guimarães, gerente de mercado do CPqD, conta que o centro decidiu participar desse projeto "com alguém que já fosse comprometido com a tecnologia". Por isso, convidou diversos fabricantes, mas só um - de capital nacional e com fábrica no país - se interessou, mas seu nome ainda não pode ser revelado por cláusulas contratuais, segundo ela.

Assim que o projeto da ERB estiver pronto, essa companhia será a primeira a ter acesso à tecnologia para nacionalizar a produção do equipamento. Outros fabricantes instalados no país, no entanto, também poderão licenciar a tecnologia do CPqD depois disso, de acordo com Carla.

Segundo ela, a conquista é importante para o centro porque, em seus 30 anos de atuação, nunca havia desenvolvido o projeto completo de uma estação radiobase, "equipamento que está restrito às multinacionais" no país. Além disso, ressalta a executiva, o centro brasileiro poderá receber royalties não só de fabricantes instaladas no país, mas de estrangeiras interessadas na produção do equipamento em outros países.

Ela lembra que muitas operadoras de telefonia estão vislumbrando a tecnologia WiMax como opção para ampliar a oferta de banda larga de forma mais rápida e menos custosa que as redes ADSL - que usam os próprios fios de cobre das linhas tradicionais.

Como não utiliza fios, o padrão WiMax permite a cobertura até de regiões remotas e de difícil acesso para tecnologias como fibras ópticas, por exemplo.

O investimento não foi revelado, mas a gerente do CPqD explica que ele será dividido entre a própria Intel, idealizadora do projeto, o centro e o parceiro industrial. Como a Intel escolheu a Polônia para sediar o desenvolvimento da plataforma Glenfield, o CPqD já enviou sua equipe de técnicos envolvidos com o projeto da ERB para serem treinados naquele país.

A Intel e o CPqD firmaram parceria para projeto de pesquisa e desenvolvimento dentro da estratégia da Intel para impulsionar o mercado da tecnologia WiMax – sistema sem fio para acesso em banda larga à Internet – em nível mundial. Caberá ao CPqD o desenvolvimento de tecnologia brasileira para estações radiobase – ERB WiMax - a partir da plataforma Glenfield, da Intel.
 
A ERB-WiMax a ser desenvolvida pelo CPqD terá faixa de freqüência de 3,5 GHz e os resultados desse projeto serão transferidos para a indústria nacional, na condição de tecnologia básica de referência, gerando competência brasileira para atuar nesta tecnologia emergente e de franco crescimento em todo o mundo.
 
O CPqD criou o seu Centro de Competência WiMax em 2005 e é uma das poucas empresas selecionadas ao redor do mundo para ter acesso antecipado a tecnologia para estações radiobase da Intel. "Estamos buscando aumentar a presença da tecnologia brasileira nos mercados nacional e internacional e contribuindo para projetar a imagem do país no cenário tecnológico mundial, desenvolvendo soluções que ultrapassam as nossas fronteiras ", comenta Cláudio Violato, vice-presidente de tecnologia do CPqD.
 
De acordo com o gerente de plataformas de comunicação da Intel, Américo Tomé, por se tratar de uma maneira econômica de prover acesso à internet em longas distâncias através de tecnologia sem fio, a tecnologia WiMax contribuirá para a inovação e o progresso do Brasil, com o fundamental impulso do CPqD e da Intel.
